About Zakynthos
Zakynthos or ZanteĀ
Because of its position, Zakynthos, in the old days, when it was still under the tutelage of the Venetians, the French and the English, was called the "Flower of the East" (Fior di Levante). Precisely because it was on the edge of the Western world at the time. At the same time, the opposite coast of the Peloponnese was under the Ottoman Empire.
Zakynthos, along with all the other Ionian islands, came under the sovereignty of Greece on May 21, 1864.
The island is a natural monument! Morphology presents two main aspects, one smoother in its east and one more mountainous in the west. The eastern shores are mostly sandy or pebbly. The western coasts consist of high vertical rocks, at the bases of which some of the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean and perhaps the world have been formed. The most famous beach of course is that of Navagio.
